About Us

A Brief History

The Faculty of Arts and Sciences was founded on 20 July 1982 within Akdeniz University as a "Mission Faculty" in the classical sense. It takes Atatürk's Principles and Revolutions as its guiding principles, uses basic scientific fields and aims to implement them resolutely into social life. It commenced its educational and training activities on 30 March 1983.

The establishment of our faculty as a Faculty of Letters was officially recognised on 25 October 2010, following the decision made by the Council of Ministers (decision number 2010/1058). This decision was published in the Official Gazette on 13 November 2010 (issue number 27758) and entered into force.

The faculty's mission is to investigate the truth, and it is based on the universal principles of Social Sciences and the concept of Humanitas. In terms of Humanities, it aims to carry out educational activities at an international level, to produce scientific products and to train scientists, based on the principle of 'rerum causas cognoscere' = to think about the causes of events.
